Thompson Yucca
By Art Worley

Range
Yucca thompsoniana

A small narrow leaf Yucca up to 10 feet tall.

Thompson Yucca is probably the most common thin-leaved tree Yucca species occurring in the lower mountain elevations of the Trans Pecos.

It is a popular ornamental in Texas and is widely planted throughout drier portions of the state.

Indians used the thin leaved Yucca species as food (flowers) leaves for thatch and fiber and the roots as a soap substitute, the Yucca moths (pronuba sp.) also use this tree as a nursery.

Doves and mocking birds frequently build their nests in these and other Yucca species.

Many insect and small animal species benefit from the microcosmic world of shelter these trees provide.
